bricher was born in 1837 to English parents in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. By age 21 he opened a studio in Newburyport, Massachussetts, then Boston, where he received favorable publicity. He traveled in New England, keeping copious sketchbooks, and exhibited regularly in the National Academy of Design and the American Society of Painters in Water Colors. Bricher's Hudson River School contemporaries were Frederic Church, Sanford Gifford and John Kensett. He was a Luminist painter, interested in the effects of light and translucency.
