item description: Elegant Figures in a Park J(ean) B(apti)ste Chausatte, French circa 1760. Watercolor. a fine watercolor of French courtiers in an Itaianate landscape. French nobles traveled in Italy, often accompanied by artists (many were students at the French Academy in Rome). The artists recorded the Italian atmosphere as souvenirs for their patrons and as sources for their own work back in the studio. signed "J. Bte. Chausatte" provenance: C & J Goodfriend, New York

Edward Vi after Holbein, London circa 1825s. Watercolor and ink heightened with gouache and gold. This large miniature follows the Holbein portrait in the National Portrait Gallery closely but not exactly. The watercolor is embellished with tiny ink lines applied with a pen, then heightened with white gouache and gold. Diane Foskett lists the artist F. Read (active 1817 - 1852) as having painted "a set of ten miniatures after Holbein, and others representing Henry Viii, his six wives, Elizabeth I, Mary Queen of Scots, and Edward Vi". According to Foskett the group was sold at Sotheby's in 1960. Inscribed in the image: "Anno Domini 1517 Aetatis suae X" and on the back of the frame, on old laid paper: "King Edward Vi Aetatis suae X after Holbein" Provenance: Private Collection.

It is also an exercise in technique wherein the artist captures the wet streets effectively with watercolor washes, using highlights of color like the red upholstery of the coach and the spots of blue in the sky to convey his impression of the scene. signed by the artist “le Tournier Paris”. provenance: From a New York estate
