item description: The Mill Pond by Alfred Thompson Bricher (signed with initials Atb) watercolor heightened with white gouache on buff paper. bricher was born in 1837 to English parents in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. By age 21 he opened a studio in Newburyport, Massachussetts, then Boston, where he received favorable publicity. He traveled in New England, keeping copious sketchbooks, and exhibited regularly in the National Academy of Design and the American Society of Painters in Water Colors. Bricher's Hudson River School contemporaries were Frederic Church, Sanford Gifford and John Kensett. He was a Luminist painter, interested in the effects of light and translucency. period frame with achival 8-ply French mat and museum glass.

item description: New York State, mid 19th century. Gouache on "sandpaper" ground. One of two pictures from the same hand in our collection, this view shows small sailboats in the middle distance on a placid river. The muted palette is typical of the popular "sandpaper" technique in which the painting is done on a panel prepared with marble powder mixed into the gesso. Some of these pictures were based on prints of the time, although no print source has yet been found for this picture. In original gilt frame and glass. Provenance: From a Schenectady estate.

Edward Vi after Holbein, London circa 1825s. Watercolor and ink heightened with gouache and gold. This large miniature follows the Holbein portrait in the National Portrait Gallery closely but not exactly. The watercolor is embellished with tiny ink lines applied with a pen, then heightened with white gouache and gold. Diane Foskett lists the artist F. Read (active 1817 - 1852) as having painted "a set of ten miniatures after Holbein, and others representing Henry Viii, his six wives, Elizabeth I, Mary Queen of Scots, and Edward Vi". According to Foskett the group was sold at Sotheby's in 1960. Inscribed in the image: "Anno Domini 1517 Aetatis suae X" and on the back of the frame, on old laid paper: "King Edward Vi Aetatis suae X after Holbein" Provenance: Private Collection.
