item description:

Oil on canvas, painted ca. 1880, in fine period frame. Signed lower right. Titled by the artist on the reverse. Schafer was born and trained in Germany and came to America in 1876. He traveled in the Northeast then settled in California. During the following fifty years Schafer became one of the leading artists of the American West. His work is in many leading public collections, including the Seattle Art Museum, the Crocker Art Museum and the Oakland Museum of California. In good condition, recently cleaned and varnished.

Although unsigned, this painting is clearly the work of an accomplished artist, as seen in the treatment of the stones in the wall, the spots of red in the flowering hedge, and the carefully observed diffuse light. Most likely a scene from around one of the art colonies in Brittany or Normandy that were popular with French and American painters, although there is an element of the Munich School in this picture.
