item name: English Delft Plate With Gamers in a Chinese Garden

item description: 18th century English Delft plate, 9" in diameter. A man and a woman sit at a table in a Chinese garden, playing a game (the man holds a tossing cup and there are two groups of gaming pieces on the table). The central scene is contained in an octagonal reserve against the powder-blue ground. There are eight shaped reserves on the rim, four containing flying birds and four with artemisia leaves (both motifs are commonly found as marks on the bottom of 18th c. Chinese blue and white porcelain). Three sprigs decorate the back of the rim. The design of this plate is quite scarce.

item description: Rare English Delft tile - one of a set of four - with powder blue ground and octagonal reserve framing a scene of sailing ships in front of a fortified harbor. The distinctive corner motif and the frame stle are found on tiles from Liverpool made 1700-1775 (see Michael Archer, Delftware: Tin-glazed Earthenware of the British Isles, page 457).

item description: English Delft charger with peony in the center and three stylkized floral sprays on the rim. Marked with numeral 6 on the back. Three stilt marks visible on the reverse of the rim. Profile of the charger marks it as dating from the mid-18th century, circa 1750. One small restored chip on rim at about 11 o'clock.

item name: Horatius at the Bridge By Artist Ludwig Pfau, C.1650

item description: Tin-glazed faience stove tile by Ludwig Pfau, c.1650. The Pfau family operated a famous maiolica workshop in Winterthur, Switzerland in the 17th century and produced maiolica decorated with scenes from antiquity and religious history. New York's Metropolitan Museum has a complete stove made of these tiles showing the life of Christ and various saints. Ours illustrates an event in the history of ancient Rome. The unglazed back of the tile has raised ribs characteristic of stove tiles. Provenance: New York private collection.
