A view of Rome by Herman Armour Webster, born in New York City in 1878. Watercolor over sepia ink. A fresh and lively plein-air sketch of the Campo de Fiori, the outdoor flower market in the heart of old Rome. Webster establishes the scene with loosely drawn sepia pen lines over traces of pencil. The added watercolor washes complete the sense of a bright autumn day. Webster was born in New York in 1878, then went to Paris as early as 1900 and studied under Laurens and Braquemond. Webster was a great traveler who drew many cityscapes and landscapes on his trips in Europe. He was also a prolific printmaker. Signed by the artist, lower right corner, and titled on the reverse. item description: Vernet was so well regarded for his coastal scenes that Louis Xv commissioned him to paint a series of views of the ports of France. He traveled from 1753 until 1762 to accomplish this project. The picturesque port is a common theme in Vernet's work. inscribed “Vernet” on the reverse in pencil. Marked “Claude Joseph Vernet” on the original mount. provenance: From a New York estate

item description: Auguste Charpentier (1813 - 1880) studied under Ingres and was known for his protraits of Paris luminaries, including his famous portrait of George Sand. This fine double-sided drawing is a study for a larger work (it is squared for transfer). The figure is rendered in black chalk, then heightened with white gouache.
