Item description: Engraving by Nicolas Beatrizet, a French engraver who spent most of his working life in Rome. Beatrizet is known for his engravings after designs by Michelangelo. In particular, Beatrizet recorded Michelangelo's drawings on the theme of love, special works done by Michelangelo as gifts for his friend (cf. "The Fall of Phaeton", also drawn by Michelangelo and engraved by Beatrizet.
Our print recounts the story of the handsome Trojan shepherd Ganymede, who was admired by Jupiter. The god assumed the form of an eagle, descended to Earth and took the boy away to be his cup-bearer.
Inscribed in an old hand on the reverse, "n.82 Napuun 1866 Bartsch V. 15 P. 43". Titled "GANIMEDIS Ivvenis Troianus Raptus A Iove" in the plate.
