Item description: Edward Vi after Holbein London, circa 1825. Watercolor and ink heightened with gouache.this large miniature follows the Holbein portrait in the National Portrait Gallery closely but not exactly. The watercolor is embellished with tiny ink lines applied with a pen, then heightened with white gouache and gold. Diane Foskett lists the artist F. Read (active 1817 - 1852) as having painted "a set of ten miniatures after Holbein, and others epresenting Henry Viii, his six wives, Elizabeth I, Mary, Queen of Scots, and Edward Vi". According to Foskett the group was sold at Sotheby's in 1960. Further research is needed to attribute the Dongan picture with certainty.inscribed in the image: "Anno Domini 1517 Aetatis suae X" and on the back of the frame, on old laid paper: "King Edward Vi Aetatis suae X after Holbein" Provenance: Private Collection
