Item description:
Vernet was so well regarded for his coastal scenes that Louis Xv commissioned him to paint a series of views of the ports of France. He traveled from 1753 until 1762 to accomplish this project. The picturesque port is a common theme in Vernet's work. inscribed “Vernet” on the reverse in pencil. Marked “Claude Joseph Vernet” on the original mount. provenance: From a New York estate
